Barberry: Introducing Turmeric's Sister Solution

Updated: Sep 13

The mission at American Turmeric is to promote a holistic journey of health utilizing one of nature's most powerful plants--turmeric. However, nature has equipped itself with an arsenal of healing plants, another powerfully potent one being Barberry.

Barberries are small, tart red berries that, similarly to turmeric, have been used medicinally for centuries. The star compound in barberry is berberine, as is curcumin to turmeric. Our mission here has expanded, we believe that turmeric can and should be used in conjunction with other miraculously healing plants.

The properties in berberine relate to those of turmeric, with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities, cancer prevention, cholesterol control, weight loss, and it has more notable benefits for cardiovascular and insulin health.

An article based on a clinical trial using berberine pulled from NIH.gov titled: The effects of berberine supplementation on cardiovascular risk factors in adults: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis. The study concluded berberine (BBR) has been shown to significantly reduce triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, fasting blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, systolic blood pressure, weight, and BMI. Additionally, BBR supplementation increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. The optimal doses for different outcomes varied, with 1 g/day being effective for reducing triglycerides, total cholesterol, and weight, while 1.8 g/day was optimal for improving insulin and HOMA-IR levels. A meta-analysis of 49 studies confirmed BBR’s effectiveness in improving lipid profiles, blood glucose balance, obesity parameters, and systolic blood pressure.

Barberry has been referred to as “Nature’s Ozempic” due to the activation it starts in the metabolism that causes weight loss, as well as significantly lowering blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. This process works by decreasing insulin resistance, enhancing glycolysis, slowing carbohydrate breakdown in the gut whilst increasing beneficial gut bacteria.

One problem with both turmeric and barberry is that oftentimes, the bioavailability (how much the body can absorb) is low. The way the American Turmeric Company combats that is through fermentation, which enriches our products with the highest bioavailability. We believe that by combining these two potent plants, fermenting them to an even more potent level will transform holistic healing as the current market knows it. We are proud to present our newest product combining these two--Sister Solution!
